Selling Off Our Nation's Precious Scientific Heritage
My pal RZ points out that Ebay user "fnalprop" is really the Fermilab Property Office. He is concerned about this auction.

"How can you be expected to operate a world-class physics laboratory," he says, "if you've sold off your dunk tank?"

He also grumbles about the mediocre salesmanship employed. As an experienced Ebay hound, he could do a much better job of stirring up interest in the equipment, such as pointing out that, in decades of service at picnics, parties, and family days, it may have been used to dunk one or more Nobel Prize winners.
Fermilab dunk tank in Ebay auction

I see there is also a hay-bale roller table up for auction. I presume the bison are being fed by other means.

Perhaps they're injecting burritos into them?

I have to admit, I had hoped to see rather more exotic items being sold by the Fermilab Property Office. Small lots of antiprotons, for example.

Hopefully *very* small lots. :-)

Yes. A few hundred should be safe.
Sold FCA origin, packaging and shipment are responsibility of buyer.

Doesn't he realize that complaining makes him a prime target for volunteer work?!

That would make a great selling point, though.

I started thinking, we could tow this in a parade and give balls to bystanders. But they'd probably miss and deck little girls standing across the street.

From the auction:
Personal property purchased from the U.S. Government may or may not be authorized for export from the United States to a foreign country. The purchaser must be a United States citizen or permanent resident alien . . .
I sleep better knowing that evil-doers the world over are being denied access to this advanced technology.

Leaving only the evil-doers at home with this high-tech waterboarding system.

I see that there is still no one bidding on this. For $100, it would be a steal. The scrap metal value alone is likely to be more than that. Maybe it would be worthwhile to buy it from Fermilab cheap, and then re-sell it on Ebay with some *real* salesmanship (assuming that one doesn't want to keep it). Heck, *I'd* buy it if I weren't several hundred miles away.
