A Brush with Fuller
The more I think about it, the more pleased I am about this new stamp. I need to buy lots of them.

I wrote something about it here.

I was an inquisitive kid. I wanted to know what The Future would be like. Before January 10, 1964, I'd never heard of R. Buckminster Fuller. But one look at the cover of that week's Time and I wanted to know all about him. I read every word of that story, over and over again. I wore out all the pictures with my eye tracks. Domed houses. Tensegrity structures. Three-wheeled cars. World's Fairs. I was ten. He was 74. It was magic.

*smile* Yeah, he was a great one. My personal favorite is John Bardeen. Have you read True Genius yet?

No. His son is a physicist here; for the 50th anniversary of the transistor, he brought in his dad's Nobel medals and other memorabilia to display. Someone baked a cake in the shape of a point-contact transistor. I had a piece.

The fun I'm missing!

If you have a bit of time, I really recommend the book. It's a great story about a really fine guy.

I "met" Fuller through my Jr High art teacher. He was a student of his. always talked about Bucky. The airport story is the best. His ride didn't show. He went to complain at the deak. An announcement was made: Could someone who known Buckminster Fuller please give him a ride to his hotel?" There were a dozen people running up to take him up on the offer!
