As We May Have Thought: Dynamite 1945 Article
Just saw in Boingboing that The Atlantic has put up an archive of its articles, going all the way back to 1857.

This means that Vannevar Bush's terrific speculative article "As We May Think," from the July 1945 issue, may be found there. Not that there weren't copies on the Web before, but it's a nice opportunity for me to point this out.

Read it. You'll understand why Bush was the grandfather of hypertext and the great-grandfather of the World Wide Web. And come back and let me know what you think.

I heard that the The Atlantic had opened their archive, but didn't realize that it meant we all have access to Bush's paper until you mentioned it.

Thanks for the pointer. I'd read Science: The Endless Frontier as part of my prior life in research administration (Go NSF!), but missed this one. Of course, it'll have to wait until this evening, for some reason work doesn't seem to think that I need to be able to see The Atlantic through their network... Hmmph.

But wait -- have you considered this --

Hi Bill, I have of course read the Bush article (it was required in library school), but just recently I came across Kevin Kelly's recommendation of a film about Paul Otlet, that indicates he developed the fundamental ideas of hypertext and the web in the 1930s.

Perhaps you could try to view the film by borrowing it via interlibrary loan? ;-)
