Higgins!

Reminiscences about my brother John M. Higgins keep coming in at the Broadcasting & Cable site. (I know my brother's name, you know my brother's name, but I've spelled it out here for the benefit of the search engines.)

His friends in the TV industry have organized a memorial event on Tuesday, 12 December, so I'll be flying out to New York to attend that.

The invitation says:

PLEASE JOIN US TO CELEBRATE THE LIFE AND WORK OF HIGGINS

His friend Joel Meyer referred to "the Cher-like use of his last name." He answered the phone with that one word, and encouraged everybody to call him simply "Higgins." This amused those of us who thought of him as "John."

Picasso. Rembrandt. Oprah. There must be a word for sobriquets that shrink to a single name. (Preferably with Greek roots.) But what is it?
